When Does a Tree Need to Come Down?

A tree needs to come down when it's more likely to fail than recover, or when it's causing damage you can't fix any other way. Plenty of trees that look rough can be saved with good trimming. Others look fine from the street and are rotten inside. Here are the signs we look for:

  • More than half the canopy is dead or bare in summer
  • The lean is new or getting worse, especially if the soil is heaving on one side
  • Large cracks or splits in the trunk
  • Mushrooms or fungus growing at the base, a sign of root or trunk rot
  • Hollow spots, soft wood, or bark falling off in sheets
  • An ash tree showing signs of emerald ash borer
  • Roots lifting your slab, driveway, or sewer line
  • A tree growing into the house, fence, or power drop

If you're not sure, have it looked at. A tree health assessment tells you whether removal is the only option.

How We Take a Tree Down

Climber cutting a dead oak from the top down near a house

How we remove a tree depends on how much room we have. In an open yard, we can sometimes drop the whole tree in one piece. In most Carrollton neighborhoods, with houses close together and fences on every side, we take it down in sections.

A climber goes up and cuts the tree from the top down. Each piece is tied off and lowered with ropes and rigging so it doesn't slam into your roof, fence, or lawn. For big trees over the house, we may bring in a crane or bucket truck. Once the tree is down, we chip the branches, cut the trunk into manageable pieces, and haul it all away.

If you want firewood, tell us before we start and we'll cut it to length and stack it. One note: ash wood from Dallas and Denton counties can't leave the county because of the emerald ash borer quarantine, so we handle it according to state rules.

How Much Does Tree Removal Cost in Carrollton?

There's no flat price, because no two trees are the same. What drives the cost:

FactorWhy it matters
Tree sizeTaller and wider trees take more time, more cuts, and more haul-off
LocationA tree over the house or near power lines takes rigging and extra care
AccessBackyards with narrow gates mean more work by hand
ConditionDead or rotten trees are less predictable and slower to take down safely
StumpGrinding is quoted separately so you can choose
CleanupFull haul-off versus leaving wood for you

We'll look at the tree and give you a written price at no charge.

What to Expect on Removal Day

Chipper loading branches after a tree removal

We show up when we say we will. Before the first cut, we walk the job with you, confirm what's coming down, and point out anything we need to protect. We'll ask you to move cars out of the driveway and keep kids and pets inside. Most residential removals take a few hours to a full day. When we're done, the branches are chipped, the wood is gone, and the yard is raked and blown off.

Related Services

Most removals end with stump grinding so you can plant or lay sod over the spot. If a storm brought your tree down, see our emergency tree removal service. If the tree might be saved, tree trimming or cabling may be the better call.
