Why Get Rid of a Stump?

A stump left in the yard is more than an eyesore. It's a trip hazard and a mower-blade breaker. As it rots, it draws termites, carpenter ants, and fungus, and some trees keep sending up suckers from the roots for years. Stumps also take up space you could use for grass, a garden bed, a new tree, or a patio.

How Stump Grinding Works

Before we start, we mark any sprinkler lines, cables, or pipes near the stump. A stump grinder has a spinning wheel with carbide teeth that chews the stump down a little at a time. We work it back and forth until the stump is gone and we're several inches below the surface, usually 6 to 12 inches depending on what you plan to do with the spot. Big surface roots running out from the stump can be ground down too.

What's left is a pile of wood chips mixed with soil. We can rake them into the hole, haul them off, or leave them for you to use as mulch. If you're planting grass, we'll recommend pulling the chips and filling with topsoil, since fresh wood chips pull nitrogen out of the soil as they break down.
